25 faith-based universities offering refuge for Jewish students

The top civil rights official at the Education Department has sent a “Dear Colleague” letter to leaders of American colleges and universities to remind them of their obligations to provide a discrimination-free learning environment for all students.

The letter comes as New York-based Yeshiva University is building a coalition of institutions willing to expedite transfer processes for Jewish students fleeing antisemitism at colleges since the Oct. 7 Hamas massacres.

Several religious universities have stepped up, joining this growing list of 100 organizations that include “a diverse group of public and private, faith-based, and historically Black colleges and universities.”

The list includes:

  1. Franciscan University of Steubenville, a Catholic university in Ohio
  2. Saint Francis University, Franciscan’s sister school, in Loretta, Pennsylvania
  3. Walsh University, a Roman Catholic college in Ohio
  4. University of Notre Dame
  5. Baylor University
  6. Arizona Christian University
  7. Arkansas Baptist College
  8. Benedict College
  9. Boston Baptist College
  10. California Baptist University
  11. The Catholic University of America
  12. Central Baptist College
  13. Colorado Christian University
  14. Dallas Baptist University
  15. East Texas Baptist University
  16. Friends University
  17. Holy Apostles College and Seminary
  18. Jewish Theological Seminary
  19. Mid-Atlantic Christian University
  20. Missouri Baptist University
  21. Southern Nazarene University
  22. Southwest Baptist University
  23. Southwestern Christian University
  24. St. Joseph’s University
  25. Trevecca Nazarene University

All of the schools promise to offer expedited transfer for Jewish students without bureaucratic delay.
“We are doing this because of our Catholic faith, not in spite of it,” said Stephen Hildebrand, Franciscan University’s vice president for campus affairs. “We see this as a small way, a small thing we can do, to really love our Jewish brethren and to have solidarity with them, to let them know that we recognize what is happening to them and that not only do we oppose it, but we’re willing to help them.”
