5 things Pope Francis wanted the world to know

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. As the world mourns his death, his powerful words and actions continue to guide millions. Here are four key messages he championed—and some of the quotes that defined them.

1. Care for the Earth

Francis saw environmental care as a moral duty.
“The Earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth (Laudato Si’).”  He urged global action to protect the planet, especially for the sake of the poor and future generations.

2. Build Bridges, Not Walls

He called for compassion toward migrants and unity among nations. “A person who thinks only about building walls… is not Christian.” Francis believed we must reach across borders with empathy and solidarity.

3. Choose Mercy Over Judgment

Francis made mercy central to his papacy. “The Church is not a tollhouse; it is the house of the Father, where there is a place for everyone.” He encouraged inclusion, forgiveness, and understanding, especially toward those on society’s margins.

4. Faith Is Action

He reminded the world that faith should be lived, not just believed. “You pray for the hungry. Then you feed them. That’s how prayer works.” Through his own acts of service, he showed that love is action.

5. Let Love Shape our World

In his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, just one day before his passing, Francis offered a blessing to the world—one last gesture of his enduring commitment to peace, justice, and compassion. “May the hope of the Risen Christ carry us through every shadow, and may love, not fear, shape the world we build together.”
