A giant statue in New Jersey was built to unite all faiths

Hidden in the woods of Franklin Township, New Jersey, stands a 30-foot-tall Buddha statue, one of the largest in the United States, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Located at the New Jersey Buddhist Vihara and Meditation Center, this imposing figure is considered more than just a religious symbol—it was built as a beacon of interfaith harmony.

Here are three things to know about this unique landmark:

1) Unity
The statue of Kuan Yin, a Buddhist goddess of compassion, was built a decade ago under the guidance of a Sri Lankan monk. It embodies the vision of uniting people of all faiths, and serves as a sacred space not only for Buddhists but also for practicing Hindus, Christians, and people from various other backgrounds.

2) Interfaith efforts
The center actively promotes interfaith dialogue and understanding. It hosts events and gatherings that bring together people from different religious traditions, fostering a sense of community and shared values. There is an interfaith peace mural painted by local students featuring various symbols of different world religions.

3) Diversity
Seated in a backyard, the statue’s presence reflects the diverse religious landscape of New Jersey. It stands as a reminder of the state’s commitment to religious freedom and the importance of respecting and appreciating different faiths.
