A 2012 review in the Handbook of Religion and Health led by Harold G. Koenig, M.D., M.H.Sc., found that 79% of studies examining faith and emotional health reported a positive relationship between religious involvement and overall well-being.

The review analyzed hundreds of academic studies exploring how faith and spirituality relate to happiness, life satisfaction, meaning, and emotional health. Researchers found that religious involvement was often associated with stronger community support, increased optimism, and healthier coping during difficult circumstances.

While scholars note that the relationship between religion and well-being can vary depending on the person and context, the overall findings pointed toward a consistent positive connection across much of the research.
