Daughter of slain officer delivers message of forgiveness
The daughter of a slain Texas officer is receiving attention for her message of forgiveness. Shelby Houston, 18, lost her father, Richard Houston II, after he was shot and killed in the line of duty earlier this month. He was responding to a call of a disturbance in a grocery store parking lot.
Last Thursday, Shelby delivered a eulogy that sparked a standing ovation and a 90-second clip posted to Twitter has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
Shelby said she doesn’t hate the man, Jamie Jaramillo, who is charged with killing her father. She feels compassion for him—and wants him to know Christ.
“There has been anger, sadness, grief and confusion,” she continued. “And part of me wishes that I could despise the man who did this to my father. But I can’t get any part of my heart to hate him. All that I can find is myself hoping and praying for this man to truly know Jesus. … My prayer is that someday down the road, I get to spend some time with the man who shot my father—not to scream, not to yell at him, not to scold him, [but] simply to tell him about Jesus.”
