‘I feel so distant from God’: Virginia pastor says his soul is tired, announces sabbatical
Rev. Howard-John Wesley, head of the historic Alfred Street Baptish Church in Alexandria, Virginia, shocked his 10,000-member congregation when he announced his decision in early December to step down from all his duties as senior pastor.
“You can’t pour out of an empty cup. It is very dangerous for your pastor to be on empty,” he told congregants frankly. “I need to take care of me.”
Wesley, who’s been pastoring the megachurch since 2008, added that he was tired—tired in a way that one night of sleep could not cure: “I’m tired in my soul.”
