Kanye West is the first to win top Gospel album and top Christian album at BBMAs

Kanye West, who didn’t make it to the 2020 Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday, took some time out on Thursday to post a thank you to God and his fans after winning four awards at the BBMAs.

Seated in a moving SUV, West celebrated his nine nominations and four wins, which included Top Gospel Artist, Top Christian Album and Top Gospel Album (Jesus Is King) and Top Gospel Song (“Follow God”).

“Thank all of my fans, thank all of my Christians that’s been praying for me, praying for the day when I would serve the Kingdom,” he said in the clip. “You know, God just keeps showing up. The incredible increase and the favor.”

It was also a big night for Christian music artist Lauren Daigle who won the award for “Top Christian Artist.”

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Daigle reminisced on her journey noting five years ago to the day was when she wrote her hit song “You Say” which catapulted her to stardom. She credited hope in God for her success.

“There is amazing hope found in God, and he has an incredible way to take one story and turn it completely different,” Daigle said. “I was just a girl from Louisiana, and now I’m standing here in Los Angeles; and for all those watching that need hope tonight, He has it. He has it. He has the hope, especially for times like these.”

Other wins at the ceremony, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, included For King & Country taking home Top Christian Song for “God Only Knows.”

It was the duo’s first Billboard Music Award for the Grammy Award-winning multi-week No. 1 hit in the Top Christian Song category.

Joel and Luke Smallbone, the brothers that make up For King & Country, shared in a statement: “Never in our career had we seen such gifted artists believe in and collaborate on a song like ‘God Only Knows’… from Dolly (Parton) to Timbaland to Echosmith to R3HAB… And fittingly, with the unprecedented nature of this track, never in our career have we won a Billboard Music Award! So, to our most wonderful musical partners who each brought their own heart and passion and lent their voices (or bests) and took this hope-filled message worldwide, we say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ and we share this acknowledgment with you! And to the 2020 BBMA’s—we send our love and respect and gratitude.”
