‘Pray for our nation’: Faith leaders react to Trump shooting
In the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally, faith leaders from various backgrounds are sharing their thoughts and prayers, emphasizing unity, healing, and a call for peace in America.
Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: “Together with my brother bishops, we condemn political violence, and we offer our prayers for President Trump, and those who were killed or injured. We also pray for our country and for an end to political violence, which is never a solution to political disagreements. We ask all people of goodwill to join us in praying for peace in our country.”
Bishop T.D. Jakes, The Potter’s House Church in Dallas: “Our nation is in desperate need of healing and unity. This act of violence is a stark reminder of the importance of coming together in prayer and understanding, regardless of our political affiliations. We must seek peace and reconciliation in these turbulent times.”
Rabbi David Wolpe, Visiting Scholar at Harvard Divinity School and Max Webb Emeritus Rabbi of Sinai Temple: “The attempt on former President Trump’s life is a tragic event that underscores the need for tolerance and dialogue in our society. We pray for his swift recovery and for wisdom and compassion to prevail in our hearts and actions.”
Russell Moore, Editor-in-chief and the Director of the Public Theology Project at Christianity Today: “Political violence is evil to the core and is an attack on everything this country represents. Attempted murder is an attack on the image of God. This is awful.”
Imam Ahmed Ali Uzir, NYC Commission on Racial Equity: “This is a way we all have to live in New York, and we have to show to our children that we are one nation under God, under the flag of United States of America. May God bless former President Donald Trump, his family to come out from this painful situation, and may God protect our beautiful country, United States of America, and all of the world.”
President Albert Mohler, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: “May God protect all who serve us. Thankful former President Trump is safe. We need to know what happened here. This kind of attack is an attack upon our entire political system and our commitment to ordered liberty. Let’s pray for our nation.”
