This faith film is now Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film since 2019

It’s about a spiritual awakening amongst a close-knit community of youths. Sound familiar? While there really was a movement at Asbury University in Kentucky in the 1970s, this one had a bit of a counter-cultural twist.

“Jesus Revolution” is set in 1970s Southern California. It follows the true story of youth minister Greg Laurie, and his encounter with Pastor Chuck Smith, and charismatic preacher hippie Lonnie Frisbee, the face and force of the Jesus Movement in the 1960s and 70s. When Frisbee and Smith open the doors to Calvary Chapel, they welcome a swarm of hippies. The youths are drawn (mostly) by Frisbee’s fresh and down-to-Earth perspective on the Gospel.

The film has outperformed expectations, grossing nearly $46 million following its third week at box offices in the U.S., according to media reports. It’s also officially taken the berth as Lionsgate’s highest-grossing post-pandemic film since 2019.

“God figured out a way to make it happen,” producer Kevin Downes told CBN News. Downes helped craft the movie alongside the Erwin brothers (Christian filmmakers Jon and Andy Erwin). “It’s such a blessing and totally God.”

The last explicitly religious film to top $40 million at the box office appears to have been “Breakthrough,” from Fox, in 2019.

While the film has received mixed reviews from critics, it’s earned unwavering audience approval. The film’s current Rotten Tomatoes audience score sits at 99% from over 5,000 reviews. Subsequently, it also received an A+ CinemaScore.
