Women of faith: 4 key figures who made impact

By Connie Guo

In creating religious traditions throughout history, women have been important figures who served as pillars of fortitude and faith. Women of faith complement the strength of the human spirit. They challenged religious traditions as well as societal norms. Women of faith frequently assume inferior roles in society as a result of gender discrimination. However, there is a growing movement within religious traditions to recognize the sacred contributions of women of faith, from past to present.

Here is a collection of inspirational women and their stories of empowerment:

  1. Hinduism holds Draupadi from the Mahabharata epic as the model for courage, wit, and resilience in the face of difficulties. Draupadi defied social conventions by getting married to five different men. The life stories of Draupadi inspired everyone, male or female, to challenge conventional expectations and the status quo. They also inspired women to rethink gender norms in society.

  2. In Judaism, Queen Esther’s courage and selflessness are both inspirational and empowering. In the most prominent example, Queen Esther puts her life in danger to protect the Jews from being exterminated, and her bravery and cunning show that anyone can be a powerful force, even when they are subject to enormous persecution by wealthy elites.

  3. In Christianity, Mary Magdalene was shown as a Christian who followed Jesus Christ in the Gospels. She is portrayed as one of the few people who saw Jesus being crucified, buried, and raised. Mary Magdalene is a pivotal person in the history of Christianity because of her steadfast devotion to the Resurrection.

  4. In Islam, Khadija bint Khuwaylid, the Prophet Muhammad’s first wife, is revered and praised for her entrepreneurship, wisdom, wit, and unflinching devotion to her husband. The accomplishments of Khadija show that great women are not restricted to domestic responsibilities in their culture. Muslim women all across the world are encouraged by her legacy to seek careers in education, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
